Despite this being the 5th book in the series, this was my first exposure to both this series and the author. It was a very good introduction.
Pros: The characters were quickly established, understandable and relatable, the game world that they end up trapped inside makes sense and unlike many LitRPG/GameLit books, while there is acknowledgment of player stats and a leveling mechanic in the game, it does not get bogged down in the details of that end of the game mechanics. In fact, the main character can’t even properly access her menu for quite a while as the game is glitching!
Cons: Only two minor Cons for this book. One is that characters from earlier books in the series arrive and make for an almost deus ex-machina resolution of the big problem (other than being unable to log out of the game!) that Jessica is facing at the end of the story, making it seem a bit too tidy and easy to me (admittedly that is a personal preference issue). The other is that the end is, if not quite a cliffhanger, one that means you NEED to continue the series to get a feeling of resolution regarding Jessica and her sisters.
Overall: 4/5 stars, and recommend for anyone looking for a quick, fun and mostly light-hearted listen.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
