I enjoyed the series very much. I lost some sleep not wanting to turn it off. The pairing of space and magic was fun and created some interesting problems to deal with.
As an 87 hour boxed set it was well worth the credit. As good as the writing and narration were I would never have used 16 credits for all of the books. At around 5 hours a piece it wouldn’t have been worth the money.
I hate it when Si-Fi writers split up the books in a series at 10 hours or less. The books are ended so arbitrarily, and not at a logical stopping point. Just so you have to buy another one to continue the story. That’s a cheap ploy and you don’t get your money’s worth. Breaking a series up into 20 hour segments gives the readers value for their money, and gets you really invested in the story. So then I’m really committed and excited to read the next book.
My advice to Si-Fi writers is to make each book longer, and instead of taking advantage of your readers give them really great value for their money. Loyal readers are vitally important to all writers, you can’t afford to alienate them.
