The House is a clandestine organization that has protected humanity from all things evil and paranormal (AKA: things that go bump in the night) for time immemorial. Despite daddy issues, an allegedly traitorous ex-wife, and a new partner who may not be entirely human, Derek Hawthorne wisecracks his way through brawls with zombies and warlocks while trying to not just keep normal humans safe, but ignorant of the supernatural threats they face.
Fans of Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files, Larry Correia’s Monster Hunter International, and Daniel O’Malley’s The Rook will feel right at home with Derek Hawthorne and the hidden world of evil magic wielders and monsters.
At this point, I don’t know what else I can say about Kafer as a narrator. He’s so dependable in these kinds of roles and really knows how to deliver Phipps’ lines. At this point, he should be getting more recognition. I’d love to hear him read the next Michael Connelly or Robert Crais novel.
