I like the sci-fi military genre, but this series is a slog. It starts off well enough but never skips an opportunity to slow down the story for some more preaching.
I like the narrator, but he struggles with accents in this book. Every time he tries a Scottish accent, it totally takes me out of the story.
I’m okay with moral dilemmas and soul-searching as part of this genre. Still, this book focuses on preaching about religion to the point that it overshadows the story and character development. If it had just dialed it back a bit and added a bit more story, it would have been a much better book series. If you like this type of story (moral humans against authoritarian humans), the Lost Fleet series is just so much better.
