The story was very interesting. The story introduces an interesting world, develops many interesting characters, introduces a number of potential enemies and includes an epic battle as the clomax.. then it just ends.
Imagine if Sanderson had just written book 1 of the Stormlight series, then quit. that is what happened here. just when you think the heroes are going to go out and fight the Ranganese, stand up to the empire and hunt the mysterious “god” that is collecting orphans with magic abilities to form and army… all the makings of an epic fantasy series; it ends? (and it is a standalone book).
I feel like I wasted a lot of time on the world building and table setting in preparation for a story I will never get to hear. The ending was truly the biggest disappointment since the last episode of LOST.
