A multi-book 80+ hr series previously unknown to me for one credit was a gamble I decided to take, and I made the right choice. This series is for all intents and purposes a TV show. Each book (episode), is contained, medium stakes, a great adventure of a lovable rag-tag crew with setup and payoff. Different books focus more heavily on particular crew members to flesh out their back stories or change up the narrative perspective, which is great for freshness! The narration is really great, with good and identifiable voices for the main character, and a definite light-hearted tone overall that makes for easy listening.
If you are a fan of the classic Firefly formula, smuggler with a heart of gold trope, this is definitely a must listen.

Space wizards and magic: this is not star wars, this is Merlin-esque cloaks, staffs, and poultices… in space. The incorporation of magic, and the descriptions of magic in this universe are incredible, it feels like a unique and fresh take. It also is something utterly commonplace in the universe, and is treated as such. I often finding myself wishing for more magic, but I think they’re right to not go overboard on it.
