Overall I give it a 3.5 star. I was invested in the side characters more than the 2 main characters. Side characters made the audiobook more enjoyable and the reason why I had to finish it. Otherwise it would have been a DNF. This came as highly recommended so perhaps my expectations were significantly high. I’ve read a review that maybe this book might have been more enjoyable had I read it rather than listened to it first.

I liked Ox well enough. But melodramatic much?

I didn’t appreciate the unnecessary repetitive words. It can achieve the same impact with just one rather repeated 3-5 times. It makes it sound like the mind of a child rather than an adult. But perhaps it was added to enhance the drama.

I felt like the main character stayed at a very young mental age rather than mid 20s by the latter half of the story. I felt like he should have had more growth but he had a lot of hang ups due to his father.

As for narration, the tone of voice didn’t match what I pictured an alpha should sound. It was leaning toward whiny rather than firm and resolute, and dare I say it? Feminine?

Would I recommend this? I don’t know. I think I would advise reading it first. Which is what I should have done cause people rave about this book when they’ve read it rather than listened to it.

It just wasn’t my cup of tea. I gave it a chance cause I love shifter stories and this is a very unique take on shifters. That makes it worth perhaps a credit if nothing else.

I’m willing to give this author another try with his other work. This might not have resonated with me but it doesn’t mean he’s a terrible author.
