I got this series for two reasons. First, it was a HUGE amount of hours for a single credit, and second, many reviewers kept comparing it to FireFly (TV Series). I was a fan of the tv series and the movie, so I thought I’d give it a try. Simple disclaimer, this is not a FireFly clone. I’ve found a number of sci-fi and fantasy series that are simply cheap ripoffs of more popular books and worlds. That is not the case here. It has a FireFly “vibe” to it, but it’s most certainly a different and original series.
The narration is very good, which I find can often make or break an audio book. The voices are fairly well done, distinct, and dependable. I’ve had other narrators who can’t keep their characters straight, or who’s characters all start to sound similar towards the end of a series. Not the case here.
The characters are interesting and well fleshed out. Their dialogue is good, creative, witty and developed. Definitely got a number of good laughs out of this, and the author and narrator let you “get to know” them. They are not one dimensional, and while you get a feel for how each character is, they don’t become predictable.
The stories themselves are interesting and engaging. There is no “fate of the universe” stories, but they also don’t rely heavily on “deus ex machina” plot changes, which plagues some other stories. Those always make me roll my eyes and I see it as a lack of creativity, not a welcomed surprise twist. The stories play out in a reasonable fashion, from the story’s point of view. They aren’t terrible long, and they aren’t terrible complicated, but they’re fun to listen to and it’s enjoyable listening to everything play out. I’d absolutely recommend this to anyone who’s in to wester, sci-fi, fantasy, or outlaw genres. It’s a good mix of all of them.
