Jack Olsen is my favorite true crime author and one of my favorites in any genre. He writes like a great novelist, and gets into the characters’ heads. In this book his depictions of the two killers are both hilarious and horrifying. Think of any fictional character and none can beat Cindy Ray and his dimwitted, pompous fool of a boyfriend David West. They’re like characters out of Fargo at its best, or Elmore Leonard criminals. Cindy is a master manipulator, like Lady Macbeth, and seems to have multiple personalities, but this may be part of her act to manipulate. There are several other colorful characters, such as David West’s Blanche DuBois mother, and Kim Paris, the beautiful operative for an investigator who finally broke the case.

Kevin Pierce is a great narrator. His dry, restrained style is perfect for the content. Some narrators get too hammy, or try to mimic accents with poor results. Not Pierce.

I’ve listened to several of Olsen’s books narrated by Pierce and this is my favorite.
