I’m writing this review at 44 hours into the audiobook for the record.
Ok here we go for now,
For me the first book was a bit hard to get thru. Many reviews here say they couldn’t stand the first few hours because of the sound, it is a bit jarring with the shwoosh thing but after a while you don’t notice it and you’ll realize why it’s even a thing.
For me the thing that almost made me stop listening is the way the characters speak. it’s some weird formal way of speaking but even commoners and pirates are all talking like they are in the kings court or something. There is no differentiation between the classes or the positions the characters are in. They all just apparently are very well tongued even if they can’t read. Honestly i think this may be because of the narrator not picking up on the intended cadence of speech for the characters in the book. I read a few pages on my own and it made much more sense than the way it is read in the audiobook version.
As hard as it was to get thru the first book it did set up a good setting for the second book. This one is MUCH better. The writing style is much less formal and feels more natural. There are introductions to new characters and the ties between all of them are really cool. This book really explains why the trilogy is called “Twinborn” and honestly it is pretty cool.
Near the end of the second book it starts getting more political and setting up for the third book and i just kind of lost interest. I will pick this back up and finish it but i need something a bit more invigorating for the next week lol.
All in all, if you can get thru the first book you will like the second MUCH more than the first believe me lol. It also has a fairly intriguing storyline but it is also pretty slow.
I will edit this after i have listened to the third book.
Hope this helps you choose!
