What was most disappointing about J.J. Holden and Henry Gene Foster ’s story?
Plain flat. No depth. Nothing unique about characters, plot, or survival. Could have been a summary of a dozen other novels that are much better written.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
The narrator made the best of the cookie cutter characters and plot.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment. The book might have just started to go somewhere when it ended.
Any additional comments?
I enjoy a lot of dystopian fiction and think there is still room for many more books in the genre. In my opinion, a good post-apocalyptic or EMP novel requires mindful and artful weaving of plot and character development with survival depending on skills, tools, will to survive, and at least a little dumb luck. The One Second After series by W. Forschen is at the top of my list. The Survivalist series by A. American and the Home series by T. Abrahams (also narrated by K. Pierce) are also fine examples. This book introduced a plot and some characters, but was rather short on everything including duration. Maybe if the author/publisher hadn’t cut the series into too many pieces there might have been enough book to enjoy. But as it is, it is only an introduction to a book that wasn’t worth the credit and I don’t want to use another credit or two to see if it gets any better.
