I found this book to be incredibly tedious and overwrought. The sympathy for wartime and post-war Germans was over the top and sometimes offensive, in my opinion. I understood the sentiments, but simply thought they went too far. Most Germans may not have been completely in-the-know with the specifics of what was happening at the camps, but they most certainly knew Jews were being persecuted, dehumanized, and “deported,” never to be heard from again…all at the behest of a man they adored. The book also stretched believability in many areas, which isn’t something I enjoy in this genre. Just not a winner for me. I enjoyed the author’s other book – so I was surprised at my reaction.
