I’ll start with the good. The characters are still hilarious, the witty nerd/pop references are great, and cross over/4th wall breaking elements fit perfectly with the series. It’s entertaining, will keep you laughing and is worth the money to see the story progress.

That being said onto the bad.

Unfortunately, I don’t feel this addition to the series kept with tone of overarching story and clashed with it’s most powerful aspects. This series takes a more serious darker tone than the previous installments. This wouldn’t be a problem except it just doesn’t really work too well mixing with the more fantastical comic book mechanics. My biggest issue was that this book once again “jumped the shark” in terms of literary craziness. It worked with the previous books because it was a parody of itself and didn’t take itself too serious. This time round instead of the hilarious literal shark with laser beams riding a tornado to save the day it just turns into a long stream of unlikely, complex and weird events intermixed with some funny out of place banter and actual deep personal issues for the characters. It’s like South Park decided to put together an actual documentary and every five minutes throw in a funny inappropriate joke. The individual parts are pretty good but the chemistry just doesn’t work together as a whole.
