My problem with this book basically boils down to 1 issue. The main character is no longer relatable or sane. I get that the author was attempting to show the transformation of the main character by having him deal with tough situations and get desensitized, but the basis for that (a solid sense of right and wrong) just isn’t there. Other than a vague sense of unease and a constantly disapproving companion, there’s really no inner conflict. He even starts fully acting out the part of a villian (It’s actually at that point that I realized I have no emotional investment in the main character anymore and don’t care how the books ends).
I don’t mind a dark main character, but the character should be relatable and not just conveniently psychotic.
