This is one of the darkest books I’ve ever read. It’s gritty, graphic, emotional, suspenseful. The main characters are intense, each in their own way. Ethan is the sickest person, pure evil powered by his past. Gianna is an amazing survivor, learning each time Ethan abuses her. She’s strong and smart, adaptive and cautious. Derek is an incredible ally, but not her savior. He tries to keep her safe while allowing her to find her own way to save herself. The three narrators did a great job providing the voices of the main characters. I had not read this book, nor any reviews of it, prior to listening to the audio book. At best, domestic abuse is a difficult subject, but the author handled it as sensitively as possible. I normally devour books, but had to listen to this one over a week’s time, stepping back to absorb the story, and allow my emotions to cool. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
