While Travis Bagwell has tip-toed on the ethical and moral borders with other main characters in terms of their decision to kill real and NPC characters en masse, it was always framed as a defensive position, i.e., they did it against those who were out to kill them and they always tried to minimize the collateral damage. However, in Apathy, the author first approached and then clearly crossed a moral and ethical line in terms of justice for the wrongs the MC, Eliza, wrought on innocent players.

[SPOILERS FOLLOW] The first instance where many adventurers died due to the traps she set to capture the stag was careless of her, one could somewhat rationalize that those who died knew the risks of dying and choose to seek the quest anyway. Even so, those viewing the gameplay in the real world would not look kindly on a player who through fear and carelessness ended up killing these players.

The second occurrence was even less defensible in that all those who died, while involved in smuggling, were non-combatants and Eliza’s carelessness cost them their lives. The author attempts to excuse this as an unfortunate and unforeseen outcome but, again, in the real world, the person would be held responsible for these deaths and held accountable. There’s no sugar-coating it, Eliza is a PKer and she knows it and chooses to escape the justice that is due her which makes her ignoble, at minimum.
