Pretty standard for this sort of writing—introduce interesting characters and plot, then turn it into a masturbatory description of what the author would do if he had arbitrary power.
You begin with high hopes because the protagonist seemed intelligent and had reasonable options to work with. Once he simply had to get mad enough or try hard enough to win stupidly outmatched encounters, you’ll want to stop listening.
