I finished this book, but it was painful. The writing is elementary. The heroics of the leading character defied belief. There are two themes at work here. The more interesting one is that of self-discovery, as the hero realizes that his book-learned knowledge of disaster preparation is really quite worthless. The irritating part is the silliness of his superhuman heroics that strain common sense and believability.
The reader who seeks a realistic portrayal of post-apocalyptic America would be well served to undertake “One Second After“ by William R. Forstchen.
