I am so enjoying this series about Pieter and his allies as they try against terrible odds to free their world of the evil beings that would destroy them. This book picks up shortly after book one ends, as Pieter is training his new Chamenos warriors and the newly hatched dragons. In this book, Pieter comes into his own as a leader, but it certainly isn’t easy for him. His would-be warriors and his closest friends have more faith in him than he does. But his internal struggles felt authentic for someone who has been chosen by fate, as it were, to do what he is doing, not because of any personal ambition of his own. I love how his dragon Gloriox is so supportive and wise, as is Rosa, Pieter’s slow-burn love interest. (They actually share a few chaste kisses in this book! Ooooo!) I love how Rosa got a bit of her own story with that one pesky dragon! This book has losses that Pieter and his ragtag band of rebellion warriors grapple with, and they have to make an uneasy peace with someone who has betrayed them. The various showdowns with the Draznar and Evalea help Peter learn more about the strength of his emotion-driven Chamenos magic and his abilities as a strategist, tactician, and leader. The final scene with Evalea teases about the much bigger battle ahead, the focus of the next book. I’m glad I already have that one downloaded and ready to go! The narrator does an excellent job voicing the different creatures and people. I love the Chamenos people’s Scottish accents, and the narrator makes the dragons sound very old and wise. An excellent listen, and highly recommended. You do need to listen to the first book of this series to truly appreciate this book’s story.
