I had been wanting to read this book for a while but I never found the time to get invested like the story deserves. Thankfully I have a job that affords me 6/7 hours a day to myself driving around, so I was happy when the audiobook became available.
The story of Vala, an orphaned girl raised in a chateau with a prince she protects due to her unusual skin affliction, grabbed my attention with the first pages read. This narrator did a great job of emoting everything the characters were feeling throughout. The action and mysterious circumstances that will change Vala’s life forever start happening pretty fast once you get into the world building.
There’s a mixture of rich characters you grow to love… and hate. New revelations are revealed to her and a new love interst as well. Which sort of broke my heart at first but I was happy the way things worked out. There was never a dull moment from one moment to the next. I love how the book ended on such a dreamy moment of hope and promise for Vala leading into her next adventure!
