I’m a sucker for really long books and this one was recommended by a few reviewers who liked Commune which I did as well (despite its tendency to veer into being a gun manual for the post apocalypse). But this book is just a relentless series of battle manuvers and preparation for more battles between good guys and bad guys. There is no character development beyond stereotyping of said good guys and bad guys (good guys have families they care about, bad guys are stupid and have zero morals). Also there are very few female characters written in at all which for me is a major shortcoming.

I am much more interested in stories of how people would live and survive in a post apocalyptic world than how they are going to fight with each other. I listened far too long waiting for something interesting to develop, or even just a character I could care about to emerge. I finally realized it’s not going to happen. I’ll be returning this one.
