I’ve found myself really interested in this particular genre for a while. the sample I listened to made the series seem promising. unfortunately the writing was a bit stiff and relied quite a bit on descriptions of weaponry and equipment instead of fleshing out characters who all seemed pretty black and white (probably by the authors design) .
one of the big things that made listening difficult is the authors grasp of the passage of time. from the clumsy execution of hrandmas letters to Chloes rapid development then sidelining later in the book. it was all poorly executed to the point that I didn’t know when or where the story was sometimes.
moat implausible was the depressed, latent alcoholic out of shape mechanic turned action hero in a matter of weeks. one can only suspend disbelief so far. it showed a real lack of respect for the reader in my opinion.
not as glaring but equally important was the lack of a sense of place for the story. I’ve never been to the Pacific northwest and I’d venture that the author hasn’t been either. the descriptions of the landscape were superficial and generic. a real missed opportunity there.
the political subtext is rather ham fisted and made me feel Luke I wasn’t a part of the audience he wanted to reach.
won’t be waiting for the next series.
