The story arc is fine. It has a standard set up for the post-apocalyptic environment. There is a just enough ‘before’ to establish what was normal for the characters and to give the listener a sense of the trauma from the event. You then have the necessary milestones admonishing the characters that the world is different, careful to not trust new comers, stay alert, etc …
What is lacking is anything superlative in the characters, the narrative, or the storyline. For example, the performer nails the voices, but fails to convey the drama of the events or the emotions of the participants. It’s as if the book was intended for a adolescent audience and was purged of any life complexities or dilemmas that are the hallmark of this genre.
After the Outbreak is not a bad listen, just left me wanting more.
