One of the best things about Lily Morton’s stories is that they translate so darn well as audiobooks, and that’s due in large part to her choice of narrator, Joel Leslie. The Cuckoo’s Call is the fourteenth audiobook together, and this standalone was both charming and angsty. Wren Roberts and Mateo Rossi have a whirlwind love affair over the summer, the kind that makes you want to believe in fairy tale endings. But along with the change of season comes cracks in Wren and Mateo’s seemingly idyllic world. Wren was my absolute favorite thing about this book. He was someone who had such fortitude, and while he may not have grown up with the sort of privilege that Mateo did, he showed that money can’t really buy you love and integrity. Morton’s has penned a romance that was truly heartwarming, and Leslie brought his usual aplomb in his performance. Five stars!
