Another gimmick to keep track of

Overall I like the series but it seems like every book past the first has some new combat system or gimmick that you have to try to keep track of. It’s getting really tiresome and I find myself zoning out wide swaths of the books because these convoluted gimmicks are not worth the effort to keep track of.
