TLDR; This whole series is great, I couldn’t stop listening. If you like fantasy/DnD/GameLit you’ll love this.
Sometimes with a series, you have to make caveats, great for the price, great for the genre, great except something. In this case, this whole series is just great. The narrator goes above and beyond for some of the voices, later on, adds effects to denote monologue, Hays is just great. On top of that, the story is a great piece of “out of this world” style fiction. The main characters are suddenly dragged to a new world and they have to survive. The author comes up with a brilliant solution to the “too lucky” stuff that has to happen in most books for the story to work. Honestly, I blew through the first three of these in three days, I couldn’t stop. If the 4th was out I’d be listening to that instead of writing a review, if this was a longer series I’d probably be in trouble…
These are great books, they’re everything that you want out of a good fantasy story, enough tension that you know some of the characters won’t make it, but not enough to make you put it down after bad things happen. Enough comedy to keep a smile on your face but balanced by character trauma that leaves you feeling for the characters. These are some really great books, you won’t regret picking them up. I sure didn’t. I’m basically rambling at this point because I keep wanting more of these books to listen to and I can’t have them yet. Get the books you’ll enjoy them.
