What made the experience of listening to Mech Corps the most enjoyable?
One of the later battle scenes showed Bible’s ability to create suspense. A character has a Eureka moment that could save the day, but then gets tangled up directly, prolonging the battle as a result. Very well done! I was driving around woody western Maine and white knuckling the wheel while Andrew Wehrlen performed a variety of distinct characters. He really outperformed the virtual eReader I sometimes use. Since she’s virtual, I don’t mind telling you that she’s a bit monotone. Wehrlen brought Bible’s cast to life.
What other book might you compare Mech Corps to and why?
Boy do I like a book about giant fighting robots! Jake Bible made that notion very clear to me already with Fighting Iron 1 and 2. Check out my reviews for those at LARC-SciFi(dot)com/bookreviews. What could be better than Clay and Gibbons? How about the Jethro? A space ship full of battle mechs and the personnel to pilot, accompany, and support the big battle bots. It’s led by a woman who will cage-fight any of her crew that step out of line. They deal with hostile animal life as humanity seeks a new home.

There was a reference to the AI from Fighting Iron about the cradle where the pilots sit within their mechs. I caught and enjoyed it! It also made me wonder if the cradle was the same stuff we saw in Fighting Iron 2.

Any additional comments?
Bible’s Fighting Iron series is told almost entirely through Clay’s point of view. I prefer to read and write with limited point of view characters because it is easier to get into the story without wondering who we are tagging along with. Mech Corps did run through a long list of POVs but the breaks were easy to follow and after the Jethro launched on the mission, I had a pretty good idea what was going on.

This story really got my imagination going because humans are the alien invaders. A couple of the characters even discuss the fact while they are buddied up and traveling through the jungle. I’m interested to see where this theme goes if the story becomes a series.
