This was a fun book! I’m not really familiar with the alien/monster with humans pairings, but I really enjoyed this. I liked the world building, the way events were explained simply and logically, without fuss. Carter is a space marine, captured by an invading alien bug race, which enslaves any other race it can find, and is placed in the cage with other slaves, Pyhk and Siel. They are amazing! I really enjoyed the culture building, how the author points out how Siel is different from Pyhk, who was raised as a slave and knows nothing of freedom, while Siel tries to teach Pyhk what he knows, and how he struggles with his enslavement. The action is entertaining, and the bug race is terrifying! The love between the cage mates is really sweet and heartwarming, and seeing Siel and Pyhk attempt to court Carter is cute and funny. I liked how it is written with different points of view, that really helped understand each character, and it made the adult scenes extra hot! I will be reading the sequel as soon as I can, because cliffhangers are torture. The narrator, Joel Leslie, is marvelous, I loved how he made Pyhk sound so innocent and naughty, and Siel’s maturity stands out, and Carter’s inner comments cracked me up. His performance is always on point!
