If you read adventure stories where the hero uses his resources (powers, influence, etc.) as a means to an end, this is not your book. This series is about the means.
Primary example: (generalized spoiler) Our Hero Artorian learns his particular power is potent against a primary antagonist, but not enough to vanquish it. So he sets about to increase that power. You then listen to hours and hours (many, many years in the story timeline) of extremely detailed explanation of how that power is increased and how he progresses.
Then, the story seems to wake up from itself to find that they have all but defeated said antagonist and are blowing up its last stronghold. Game over. You missed it.
I was profoundly disappointed in this book. I am heavily invested in the detailed power base from the dungeon series and the characters. I keep hoping it will become exciting to read. Six books later still waiting.
