There was only a single character that I didn’t get attached to. I loved Florian, his role in the war was unique, not your average German solder. He was much more relatable than Alfred, who was the one character I disliked, though I appreciated his point of view. Emilia was impossible not to get attached to, she had such a… rough background, for lack of a better phrase. Whereas Joana seemed to skate past a lot of the worst. Joana might have been my favorite character, in part because I loved her cousin Lina’s story in Between Shades of Gray. I have read that book 4 or 5 times since getting it the year it released, so hearing Joana’s story and what happened with her family was really interesting and exciting.

I will say, the only problem with listening to audiobooks while driving, this one in particular, is it’s really hard not to cry. And two of those times I was driving to work and in the same stretch of road lol.
