This one continues to have it’s strengths, but more and more weaknesses. The main weakness is the need to out of nowhere… turn into a smut story. Which does not fit with the rest of the book. I came for a dragon-rider story… not a smut romance novel. There is no need in going into erotic details. Now one of the strengths continues to be the great imagination of the author. The world continues to grow. The diversity in landscapes and creatures is enjoyable. The attention to detail is done nicely. The main characters are progressing nicely. You really get to know them as they continue to develop. I have more hope for the story now that the main antagonist has been developed more. Menacing in the background can only go so far. A quality villain must believe that he is completely justified in his actions. That he is actually the hero. That has finally been presented in this installment.
You know: it can be rather difficult to not give “spoilers” when trying to type this. There is details that you have to give to really express what was the best/worst part of the book. So let’s leave it as continuing to throw in a twist here and there. Just to keep it interesting. Even though the twist at the end of this one is cliche; it would have been really easy to not have gone that route. Either way could have worked. But I don’t think this story qualifies as having the MC just being handed everything, and never facing adversity.
I still don’t like the Suri character. I definitely don’t like her being the girlfriend. The whole anti-monogamy deal is not my cup of tea. This part of the story is a huge turn off. If the story continues to devolve in this area… then I will finally call it quits on this one. I’ve nearly done so already with the weird delves into smut. But I keep waiting for the story to really grab me. Waiting for it to get better. But so far there is Zero replay-ability to this story. That is why my rating for these books keeps dropping. I’m trying to continue to give it the benefit of the doubt, just on the vivid imagination presented so far. The biggest nail in the coffin is the fact that I’m not sad that the next book is the last one to be available. A quality story leaves you wanting more. This series doesn’t really do that. I’m only still listening because I bought the whole series before listening to it, because the premise fit what I usually like. But I am not a fan of complete debased debauchery.
