Not bad. Chester Arthur is a difficult subject to deeply appreciate due to the lack of surviving letters and papers from his time in politics, especially before his presidency. Despite that, Greenberger has done a fine job in humanizing this enigmatic figure of American History.
Greenberger covered the topic of machine politics and civil reform well, if not thoroughly, and gave us a glimpse into General Arthur’s support of the union troops, and later into his peculiar relationship to Ms. Sand.
While wanting in detail and scope, Greenberger has done an admirable job with this book. Especially considering the dearth of material on his subject.
