This is probably the best memoir of a kidnapping survival I’ve read. And I’ve read a lot. What sets this one apart is that there is a lot of framing in the story, in that there is a separate perspective that discusses what was happening outside of the house during the search for these girls. It really hammers home that it’s not only these girls that were victimized, but their loved ones as well. It also can be frustrating at times that there were many opportunities to look more into the kidnapper that could’ve saved these girls sooner. Other memoirs do not provide that perspective. That is perfectly fine. But I think its inclusion here provides rich additional context. Because this is written by two of the three survivors, you also get their shifting perspectives which brings so much power to the dynamic between them. Highly recommend.
