I made it about half way through Book 2 and finally decided that I was wasting my time.

The tongue-in-cheek post-apocalyptic snark rarely makes it out of ‘cute’ and into ‘funny’.
The ‘compelling horror’ of the wasteland tends more toward ‘disorientingly unfortunate.’
The ‘action’ is generally slow and unexciting.
The characters, relationships, and motivations all make for a good study in soap-operatic melodrama.
And, finally, the hero is at once conveniently clever, foolish, skillful, and clumsy.

Wallace seems unsure of what he’s trying to do and, for me, doesn’t quite succeed at anything.
