I was underwhelmed by this omnibus. First off, the series is called the Traveler, yet the main character doesn’t leave Texas.
The story is decent, but the writing, and especially the dialogue, leaves much to be desired. I feel that the author needed to do more research into a number of areas, especially the military and preppers. Unfortunately, many of the scenarios throughout the story are not realistic in an end-of-the-world situation. For instance, Anna in the last book was particularly frustrating to read about, as she seems to get so lucky (deus ex machina) in every situation – just to drown at the end for no reason whatsoever.
The story could use a good amount more detail in many areas, at least for an older reader like myself. It could be an interesting read for a teenager, perhaps, but it doesn’t hold a candle to books such as Commune or even The Stand.
The narration was decent, I feel as though he was handcuffed by bad dialogue – if I had to hear “rat-tat-tat” one more time, I was going to turn the book off. Not to mention the constant date and time before every chapter. I can understand it for the flashbacks, but other than that, the story only took place over 2 to 3 weeks!
Overall, having listened to the entire omnibus, I cannot recommend it for the amount of time invested – but if you have the time, at least thr series only costs 1 credit instead of 3.
