I’m a big fan of Mr. Bible’s Z-Burbia series and I now have another of his series that I love. Roak’s past has been a mystery up until now but we’re finally starting to see what made him the way he is, why he’s so different than most of the humans. Roak is his usual sarcastic self only this time, he’s not after a bounty, he’s after someone he considered a friend (though I’m not sure Roak really has any friends) that betrayed him and stole all his money. Only things aren’t what they seem and there’s more going on then meets the eye.
While Roak would rather do things alone, he’s somehow accrued a group of people willing to fight for and with him. Hessa is of course great and I wonder if she’s going to get a body at some point where she can join Roak on his missions, but I’m not sure if I’d like that. I like her on the ship and keeping an eye on Roak, trying to keep him from getting killed. My favorite new character has to be Yellow Eyes. I want to learn more about him and since secondary characters around Roak seem to die, I was very happy to see him still alive at the end of this book and even becoming part of Roak’s crew. Reek is as much a mystery as Roak and I really want to find out what their backgrounds are together, what happened to them before.
I don’t want to give away who the villain is, that’s something you need to read but he sounds monstrous and I hope Roak and his new crew can overcome him in later books. The new mission Roak gets at the end of the book is intriguing and I definitely want to read more. There are so much action and intrigue going on in the story, you’re going to find yourself having to re-listen to parts just to make sure you got it all.
Mr. Wehrlen does a wonderful job, as usual. He brings life to the characters and does a very good female voice (not a lot of narrators can pull that off) and he makes the action even more thrilling. I don’t think anyone else could do Roak justice.
There are a few rough spots, there always are in books, but they’re pretty minor and don’t detract from the story. If you want to hear about someone with a mysterious past, killing people that deserve it, trying to survive just one more day and a lot of action, this book, and series, are a must read.
