This time travel/paranormal romance and urban fantasy is very entertaining. It has very low steam. It is not the best urban fantasy that I have ever read, but the fast-paced plot and lovable characters kept me enthralled. This book #1 is actually the second book of the series, and you must read book #0.5 first. The heroine Ember is pretty cool. Although she occasionally gets on my nerves a little bit, I like her bravery and intelligence. The hero Rane and his sidekick Destin are my favorite characters. They are immortal vampires, nice guys, warriors, and former Vikings. I love their subtle humor and swashbuckling style. This book ends on a slight cliffhanger, which makes me eager to listen to the next one. I recommend this series to anyone who wants a light, action-packed, romantic urban fantasy.

I didn’t really like Sarah Puckett’s narration – 3 stars from me. She narrated about half of the chapters. Her character voices are not always distinct from each other. I played the audiobook on 1.2x speed so that Sarah Puckett’s semi-Valley-Girl accent was not noticeable, and I rather liked her narration that way. Aaron Shedlock did a 5-star job with his chapters from Rane’s point of view. His voice is so sexy, and he has an excellent sense of humor. I don’t always agree with his accent choices, but he makes every character sound distinctive. He is equally skilled at male and female voices.
