I spent a credit on this series for two reasons: (1) I like the genre, and (2) it was the sort of multi-volume piece that would get me through many commutes and a couple long-distance drives. So the book(s) served the intended purpose. As for the series itself…
The setup was good, even believable, that out government and its people could be weakened to the point that the Chinese would try such a thing. When the fighting started, however, believability went out the window. A small band of folks with no tactical training are able to fight two professional armies and win? No, I don’t think so. And what about the Chinese Air Force that laid was to California? Are we to believe they wouldn’t go in and annihilate Logan’s bunch after the last big ground battle?
It seemed to me that the final chapters were a result of the author being weary of the story and just wanting to bring the damned thing to a conclusion. I don’t think anyone could really take the last half of the story seriously.
Other than all the incredulous fighting, graphic torture and people being kicked in the balls, hit in the balls, having their balls stomped or cut from the scrotum, and females comparing the size of their balls to those of their male companions (and really, what is it about testicles that the reader is supposed to find so fascinating?), there’s enough sex to fill a porn magazine. Are we really supposed to like Logan? Despite all the claims that he is a Christian, the guy is a complete alley cat.
