I think that most people will say that the book states the obvious, that all of us are self serving, deceptive individuals to some degree. The thing that the book will open your eyes to is how many of us think we are immune to certain things, but others aren’t. The book has a section on marketing and most of the people felt that the marketing tactics would be effective on “other” people. This piece forced me to stop and reflect. If you are a religious person you will not be open to the chapter on religion, which really points out the point of this book. We all live in echo chambers, and we like it that way. When I went through the first half of the book it kind of felt like a college sociology course. OK, people suck, our structures are designed to help out a small group, now what? The authors don’t ever get on a soapbox which is what most authors end up doing. They actually don’t leave you wondering where they stand on these issues as they state them openly, which I really liked. Overall I think that there’s some good thought provoking stuff, but there’s also some painfully obvious stuff. Still don’t regret the purchase!
