The overall story was pretty good and the writing was as well, so far as I could tell, but the characters and many background details were so painfully obviously written by a male feminist that finishing it was a chore. Normally I’d have rated this book pretty highly, it has some vaguely original takes on a lot of common tropes and the use of powers not only didn’t make me cringe as is common in this genre, but actually felt clever.

Then there were the relationships and politics. The kindest thing I can offer is both were ham fisted.
