I found this to really be a mixed bag; perhaps because as the dedication states, to paraphrase; “If mothers ruled the world there wouldn’t be any wars in the first place.” With a book about war, music, and written from a mother’s perspective the finished product is, well, a mixed bag of scenarios, emotions, action, and grit. However, the gist of this work (and in following with the series) has the undertone of how music can bring peace and stability to life. Maybe because I associate heading into Nam more with Creedence Clearwater Revivals’ Fortunate Son ringing in my ears than guitar music, I found the musical interludes out of place in a warrior’s story. That being said, this work certainly has some redeeming values in it, particularly when the softer side (dare I say feminine?) side of war is brought into the story. I suppose my headline into says it best about this work, it is truly a dichotomy of a warrior’s heart.
The writing of the story is solid. Although it can certainly be listened to as a standalone, one will get a better understand/appreciation for the format after having read one (or both) of the earlier works in the series. The narration is excellent, though I did take a star away because the production/sound quality seemed a bit sub-par (echoes?) in parts. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that I would highly recommend this title to female audiences and maybe not so much the male audience. Hey, it’s about honest reviews, right? LoL
