The parallels. Both books have an earthman thrown off earth. Both have a robot companion. And both robot companions provide plenty of laughs. But while Arthur Dent was just a hapless everyday man getting knocked into wonders unimaginable. Our protagonist, Cal Carver is a hapless but snarky Captain Kirk with his own ship. But the story and the dialogue never allowed me to suspend disbelief to get into Cal’s adventures.

The book has some humor but it is far, far, far to forced. And it is definitely not witty. Although the Robot . . . I mean cyborg character was continuously funny in both of the books in this series. Good enough to raise the overall book to two stars.

But after two books. I still do not like the main protagonist. And will not be proceeding further in this series.
