Idea had potential, but genuinely terrible writing. Other reviews echo this (wish I’d read them and saved myself some time) but the writer does not understand the concept of “show don’t tell”. We don’t discover things (neither does the MC) were told them. It makes the dialogue almost like Q&A with no real character development or movement. I did not care about a single character, I wasn’t made to. The plot itself was also very obvious. I have no problem using well known tropes (they’re well known and used for a reason, they work!) but you have to do them well. This book mashed a bunch together and then rushed through them all.
The audiobook narrator’s choice of dialects was interesting and took a while to get used to. I think he did a decent job with the poor material provided.
I do not recommend it and will not be reading the other books in the series.
