Coming into book 2 I was afraid this would take a “Sword Art Online” route and end the game world early with a boss fight and the characters breaking out. I am excited to see this isn’t the case! Instead of giving a broad overview of the dungeon game and plowing through levels, Matt Dinniman is taking time to explore the levels and the worlds within them. Side characters are given personality as opposed to being set dressing. The world feels alive as characters react in a way that makes sense (in the context of a bizarre life-or-death game show).

Even more intrigue is being added now that the rest of the galaxy is slowly being glimpsed through political events and comments. It’s not all just laid out, making for a more interesting read. Excited for the next one.
