I would’ve thought a book capturing the experiences of piloting an A-10 in Desert Storm would be impossible to put down, but I couldn’t finish this one.

The book closely follows the author’s journal of events during his time in the war, and suffers for it. Perhaps an argument could be made that dragging the reader through every pointless alarm scenario the author endured on base would impact on the reader the constant sense of unease and alert experienced during downtime at war, but in practice the book becomes a slog of familiar, predictable events. The same can be said of the dream sequences.

The author’s pursuit of a love interest reminded me more of a high school puppy love of desire and jealousy, rather than two adults finding their way through a complicated and fraught potential romance.

TL;DR – came for A-10 action, was disappointed.
