I read the great reviews and the premise seemed fun, so I bought the book. From start to finish, it was all around a 2-dimensional generic story. No real personalities or “character” to the characters. The MC was the same. Why did he do anything? Who was he? What did he care about? What made him special? The answer is nothing. No depth or development at all. There is nothing to care about here, no stakes, no goals, no nothing. A giant nothing burger.
On top of that, the whole premise of “Dungeon Lord” and a book about a guy suddenly gaining dungeon powers was pretty much absent from “Dungeon Lord.” It’s like in Jurassic Park, when Malcolm says, “Now, eventually you do plan to have dinosaurs on your dinosaur tour, right?” However, unlike Jurassic Park, this book never delivers.
The characters make bland choices to bland situations and that’s about it. Nothing seems like a realistic reaction to the situation or world that the MC is thrown into. Throw in a bunch of swearing and pointless sex scene and you’ve got Dungeon Lord! I’m sorry, but I’m seeking dungeons elsewhere in the future.
