As an aeronautical engineer, I can tell you my subject line is true. From concept to first flight in 100 days, outstanding. And it was beautiful. I think about this all the time while we’re running through years of simulation work prior to any physical builds. I’m not saying this latter is the wrong approach – just read “F-35, The Inside Story of the Lightning II” by Tom Burbage et al – but man, 100 days. Edgar Schmued, Dutch Kindelberger, Tommy Hitchcock… if you don’t know the role these men and more played to bring the Mustang to life, you’re in for a treat.
