considering how few titles are under this author’s belt, this book is truly impressive. The ideas are interesting and unique, the characters are individuals with motivations, intentions, and flaws. The execution of the tropes are well done, if a little overboard on some cases (his mentor can be rather annoying to read).
The two things this book suffers from most are poor editing and choppy narrative flow. there are so many times where the same word is used twice or even three times in the same sentence. That’s acceptable for the author, but reflects poorly on the editor. narratively, this book does limited perspective switching to side characters, though has exceptionally long runs without circling back to those stories. Those side plots feel abandoned and pointless without periodic updates throughout the book.
I have no doubts this author will continue to produce excellent stories, which will only improve with experience and the support of readers like us!
The narrator was fine, though he reads every sentence the same. Lots of tonal variation, but always in the same way. The characters have emotion, but the narration portions feel a bit lifeless/careless. It’s a minor thing you’ll get used to, but worth noting for improvement.
