I love coming across books that twist the typical genre tropes on their heads. In Dungeon Lord, you have a young adventurer who accidentally-ish becomes a dark lord in the actual land of the game he’s been playing–a real world, not a virtual reality. I’ve read a lot of LitRPG, but this is the first I’ve come across that starts as LitRPG, but plays out as a classic portal adventure fantasy, with a magic system that is based on RPG stats.

The story is a whole lot of fun, with a cast of misfits and rogues. Humor is wry and spot-on. I liked the main character a lot–he’s a wonderfully flawed hero, and still likable, too.

There was a horror subplot running throughout the book that had one of the creepiest monsters I’ve seen in any book. Loved it.

Narration was great, although the sound effects were a little distracting sometimes, especially with the spiders. I got used to it as the story went on, though. The narrator did a great job with the voices, though.

Overall: I loved this book. It was fun, and a fast read, light but not too light. Definitely recommend.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
