I was given this audiobook for free, to write a review. I’ve tried my best to listen to this audiobook till the very end, but unfortunately, I was not able to withstand the poor story, and narration. First, I would like to talk about the story itself, without getting into spoilers. I’m very happy that these days, we see so many new stories based on the video games, and games such as The Elder Scrolls. Ready Player One was among the books that I truly enjoyed reading. This book however, gets so many things wrong. The story is as follows: Edward is forced to join a video game world called Ivalis, as a Dungeon Lord, and the Dark Lord’s servant. He however wants to prove that he can use his powers to do good. As I said the premise is very compelling, but the issue that I encounter while listening to this audiobook was that, after listening to the audiobook for 8 hours, I still had no idea, whether we’re in a video game or a real functioning world. This is a very important aspect that every writer should get it right, as a listener, I must understand this world. And I can’t say, I understand. There a lot of character stats, in this audiobook, which I don’t see any reason for them to be there. The stats should be incorporated into the book, not just being read out loud, since we’re playing a video game, this is an audiobook. The other problem that I have, is the narration. I truly enjoyed Jeff Hays and Annie Ellicott’s narration, but the sound effects that were added to the audiobook made it very difficult for me to listen to the audiobook. So if you’re not a big fan of sound effects in audiobooks, this might not be your cup of tea.
